Become Certified

You do not have to become certified to work as an HVAC contractor, but if you do, many more doors will open for you. Below is some information about three types of certifications.

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE)

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification is recognized nationally and respected in the HVAC industry. To obtain this certification, you have to pass an exam. You can choose to concentrate in different areas, such as air distribution, gas furnaces, and air conditioning.

Excellence Certification

The HVAC Excellence certification is also recognized nationally and respected in the HVAC industry. If you would like to become a master at what you do, this type of certification is for you. You will work at a higher level and become a master specialist. To gain this certificate, you have to have a certain amount of field experience and pass an exam in your specialty areas, such as heat-pump service and residential conditioning.

If you pass the exam, you will receive a wall certificate, Excellence patch, and a chevron for your specific certification.

Environmental Protection Agency 608 Certification

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all people that have access to a container or system that stores refrigerants to obtain the EPA 608 certification. Without the certification, you cannot purchase refrigerants legally. There are three different types of EPA certifications. To obtain a certification, you have to pass an exam.

Become Licensed

Once you receive the certifications that you need and want, you should become licensed. How you do this depends on the state that you live in, but in most cases you will be required to take an HVAC licensing exam. What is on the exam will depend on the state that you live in. The main consideration, however, is your knowledge of all aspects of repair and installation of HVAC systems.

Before you can apply for an HVAC license, there are certain requirements. For example, you must be at least 18 years old, be able to speak and read English, and have experience working in this field.
